Anxiety doesn't always appear suddenly. In fact, it often builds up slowly, fed by everyday habits that seem harmless. As a psychologist, I want to tell you something important: you aren't weak because you feel anxiety. On the contrary, your body and mind are trying to tell you that they need more care.

However, some everyday behaviours keep anxiety alive without our realising it. The good news is that once you recognise these mistakes, you can start to change them. Every small step brings you closer to a calmer mind and a life with less stress.

1. You try to push away every negative thought

When frightening thoughts appear, the first reaction is to push them away by force. But the more you fight them, the more they come back.

In reality, thoughts are not facts. They are just products of the mind. So instead of fighting them, learn to notice them and let them pass without judging them.

2. You constantly seek reassurance

Many people constantly check symptoms online, ask for other people's opinions or keep asking whether everything will be all right.

At first, this behaviour brings calm. But the calm lasts only a very short time. As a result, anxiety comes back even stronger and a vicious circle is created.

3. You avoid situations that frighten you

When you avoid people, places or situations that cause you anxiety, you may feel better for a moment.

However, the brain interprets avoidance as proof that the situation was dangerous. For this reason, next time the fear becomes even greater.

Gradual exposure to fear is one of the most effective ways to reduce anxiety.

4. You constantly think about what might happen

Anxiety is fed by questions like:

  • What if I fail?
  • What if I get ill?
  • What if something bad happens?

Life goes on in the present moment. When you focus on your breathing, your body and what is happening right now, the nervous system begins to calm down.

5. You don't take care of your sleep and rest

Sleep is one of the most important allies of mental health.

If you sleep little, drink a lot of coffee or live constantly under stress, the body stays in a state of alarm.

What's more, lack of rest makes it harder to control emotions and significantly raises the level of anxiety.

6. You speak harshly to yourself

Perhaps you too tell yourself:

  • I'm not good enough.
  • I always get things wrong.
  • I won't manage.

Unfortunately, this inner dialogue feeds anxiety every day. Instead of criticism, try to speak to yourself with the same kindness you would show a close friend.

7. You wait until you no longer have anxiety before you start living

This is one of the most common mistakes.

Many people say:

"When I no longer have anxiety, then I'll travel."

"When I feel well, then I'll go out with friends."

But the truth is different. Anxiety doesn't go away by waiting. On the contrary, it begins to lose its strength when you keep living, even though you still feel a little fear.

How can you help yourself?

Accept that anxiety is an emotion and not your identity.

Take care of your sleep, food and physical activity.

Limit excessive checking and avoid constantly seeking reassurance.

Practise mindful breathing, meditation or relaxation techniques.

Finally, read books about anxiety, stress, mental health and self-development, because knowledge helps you understand yourself better.

Remember that change doesn't happen in a day. Every small choice you make today is a step towards a calmer mind. With patience, understanding towards yourself and the right support, it is possible to reduce anxiety and live with more calm, self-confidence and freedom.
