Tokology

In "Tokology", physician Alice B. Stockham deals directly with the physical changes and needs of women at different stages of life. A large part of the book is devoted to pregnancy and childbirth, explaining foetal development, the signs and symptoms of pregnancy, preparation for birth and postnatal care.

The author also covers menstruation, hygiene during pregnancy, nutrition, physical activity, rest and menopause. After birth, the focus also shifts to caring for the baby, especially during the first months of life.

One of Stockham's key ideas was that women should have more knowledge about their bodies and health, at a time when medical information about sexuality, pregnancy and childbirth was not easily available to them. For this reason, the book also holds historical importance in the development of women's health education.
