This book explains why most small businesses fail and why many entrepreneurs make the mistake of thinking that the ability to do a job is the same as the ability to run a business.

Michael E. Gerber stresses that an entrepreneur must work "on the business" and not just "in the business". He explains the importance of systems, processes and organising work so that a business can grow and not depend solely on its owner.

The book also examines three main roles every entrepreneur has: the technician (who does the work), the manager (who organises) and the entrepreneur (who creates the vision). According to the author, most people get stuck as the "technician" and never manage to build a lasting business.
