About the book
The Eternal Husband is a short psychological novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky about guilt, jealousy and the complicated relationships between men and women.
About the book:
The story follows Velchaninov, a man of high society who is suddenly confronted by Pavel Pavlovich Trusotsky, a widower whose late wife he was once involved with.
Trusotsky seems to be an "eternal husband" left in the shadow of betrayal and suspicion. He is emotionally fixated on the past and on the idea of his wife's infidelity, while Velchaninov is gradually drawn into a psychological game of manipulation, suspicion and moral tension.
Main themes:
- jealousy and obsession
- guilt and conscience
- toxic relationships
- psychological manipulation
- the emotional consequences of betrayal
Why it matters:
Although short, this book is psychologically very powerful. Dostoevsky explores how guilt and jealousy can destroy the human mind and how people remain "bound forever" to relationships that have hurt them.
