About the book
"White Nights" by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a short, highly emotional and romantic novella written in 1848. Unlike his darker and more philosophical works, this story has a gentler, melancholic and dreamy tone.
It is set in St Petersburg and follows a lonely young dreamer who lives more in the world of imagination than in reality. During the summer "white nights" (when the city never gets completely dark), he meets a young woman, Nastenka, and a brief, emotionally deep and hopeful connection forms between them.
But this is not a classic love story. It is more a story about:
- loneliness and the need for human connection
- dreams versus reality
- unfulfilled love
- emotional sensitivity and idealisation
The protagonist lives in a fantasy world where love gives meaning to his empty life, but reality does not match his dreams.
"White Nights" is one of Dostoevsky's most lyrical works – less philosophical and more emotional. It reveals a very human side of the author: the fragility of the human soul and the pain of dreams that never come true.
