About the book
In this Stoic text, Seneca addresses his friend Paulinus and criticises the way people waste time on pointless commitments, excessive ambition and needless worries. In his view, most people don't really live; they merely "keep themselves busy", paying no attention to what truly has value.
The book stresses the importance of time as a person's most precious possession, which cannot be recovered once lost. Seneca argues that only those who live with awareness, reflection and peace of mind can fully enjoy life, regardless of its length.
The main idea:
It is not that we have little time, but that we waste much of it.
In essence:
This book is a call to live more slowly, more meaningfully and with greater awareness of the present moment.
