About the book

"The Gambler" by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a short but psychologically very intense novel written in 1866. It is based partly on the author's own experience of gambling addiction and debt, which makes the book very honest and emotionally charged.

The story follows Alexei Ivanovich, a young tutor working for an aristocratic Russian family in a European town called "Roulettenburg". He becomes increasingly drawn into the world of roulette, growing addicted to the idea of quick winnings and the adrenaline of gambling. At the same time, he is in love with Polina, a complicated and emotionally unstable woman, which pushes him even deeper into a cycle of obsession and self-destruction.

The novel deals with powerful themes such as:

  • addiction and loss of control
  • obsession and the illusion of quick wealth
  • pride and humiliation
  • unhealthy love
  • the psychology of risk and self-destruction

"The Gambler" is a powerful analysis of the human mind when it falls under the sway of emotion and false hope. Dostoevsky shows that gambling is not just a game with money, but a psychological battle with oneself, in which a person often seeks not only winnings but the thrill of risk and control over fate.

It is a short novel, but psychologically very strong, clearly revealing one of the author's most personal themes: the struggle with addiction and inner self-destruction.
