About the book

"The Father in Primitive Psychology" (The Father in Primitive Psychology, 1927) is one of the best-known works of the anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski, in which he challenges the universal claims of classical psychoanalysis, especially Sigmund Freud's theory of the Oedipus complex.

The book is based on the ethnographic research Malinowski carried out among the inhabitants of the Trobriand Islands. He observes that in this society, family organisation and relationships of authority differ markedly from the Western model. In Trobriand culture, the main authority figure for a child is not the biological father but the maternal uncle, since the society is matrilineal.

Through these observations, Malinowski argues that emotional relationships and family conflicts are shaped by cultural and social structure, not only by biological instincts. He suggests that the father's role is not the same in every society and that an individual's psychological development is strongly influenced by how family and authority are organised in the culture in which they grow up.
